Mount Meru rises above Arusha National Park to 4,566 metres and offers one of Tanzania's finest short mountain journeys. The lower trail crosses open grassland and forest where giraffes, buffalo, warthogs and colobus monkeys may be seen, accompanied by an armed park ranger. Higher up, the route follows a dramatic volcanic ridge to Socialist Peak with sunrise views toward Kilimanjaro.
The four-day itinerary provides a more comfortable acclimatisation profile than the shorter option. Meru is rewarding in its own right and is also excellent preparation for a later Kilimanjaro climb.

Complete park registration and begin with your mountain guide and armed ranger. Walk through grassland and montane forest, watching for wildlife before reaching Miriakamba Hut beneath the crater cliffs.
Climb steeply through forest and giant heather to Elephant Ridge and Saddle Hut. In the afternoon, make an acclimatisation hike toward Little Meru before returning for dinner and an early night.
Start before dawn for Rhino Point and the narrow crater ridge. Reach Socialist Peak at 4,566 metres for sunrise views, then descend past Saddle Hut to Miriakamba Hut.
Descend by the scenic lower route through forest and open parkland. Complete the climb at Momella Gate and transfer back to Arusha.
