Serengeti migration guide

When Is the Best Time to See the Serengeti Great Migration?

There is no single best month for everyone. The right time depends on whether you value newborn animals, dramatic movement, river country, photography conditions or fewer vehicles.

For Calving and Predator Activity

January through March is the strongest broad window for the southern plains and Ndutu. Expect newborn wildebeest, large nursery herds and active predators.

For Northern River Country

August through October is commonly chosen for northern Serengeti. Crossings are possible but not promised; patient guiding and flexible positioning matter more than a particular date.

For Green Landscapes and Fewer Visitors

April, May and parts of November can bring beautiful light, dramatic skies and lower visitor density. Rain changes road conditions, so itineraries need realistic drive times.

How Long Should You Stay?

Allow at least three nights in the migration zone when possible. More time improves your chance of finding good herd activity without chasing a single predicted event.

Planning note: Wildlife movement changes with rainfall and grass conditions. Treat any migration calendar as guidance, not a guarantee. Source reference: Tanzania Tourism Board — Serengeti National Park.
